1867 – Andrew Johnson: explored buying Greenland & Iceland (right after the US purchased Alaska).
1942-1946 WWII – FDR: U.S. took over Greenland’s defense while Denmark was occupied, as a way to keep North America safe from naval attack. His administration offered to buy both islands.
1946 – Truman: offered $100M in gold to buy it.
1953-1963 Cold War – Eisenhower → Kennedy: nonstop negotiations for bases, radar, missiles. Both administrations seriously considered buying Greenland.
Post–Cold War – Clinton/Bush/Obama: expanded Arctic security & missile defense, and offered long term (100 year) agreements for Greenland to become a US protectorate, if the people elected to break from Denmark.
2015 – 2020 Trump: said publicly what presidents discussed privately for 150+ years.
2024/25 – Trump is seriously pursuing an expansion of the United States. This President. didn’t “suddenly” want Greenland. We have been defending it, negotiating it, and embedding there since the 1800s.
Greenland = Arctic power, shipping lanes, missiles, minerals.
Trump didn’t invent this idea.
He said the sometimes quiet part out loud. And as a ‘doer’ President, anyone dismissing the possibility is choosing to play dumb.
Final Note. There’s zero chance we invade Greenland militarily. If you believe that is a real possibility, you’ve given up on critical thinking. Our President, once again, is offering a master class in high level negotiations. You can watch and learn, or choose continued ignorance.
